"Roof of the World" was first used to describe the Pamirs by the British explorer John Wood in 1838. The high altitude makes the Pamirs as one big challenge in human dispersal in Central Asia. Because of the advances in technologies, various genetic analyses have been conducted to investigate the evolutionary history of highlanders from Tibetan-Plateau, Ethiopian highlands, and Andes. However, we almost have no knowledge of the population history about Pamir Highlanders. In addition to terrible traffic and environments, the armed conflicts in Tajikistan and Afghanistan made the sampling extremely difficult in most regions of the Pamirs. During the past years, we have established a wide collaboration and made massive efforts to start the project about Pamir Highlanders. In this study, we used next-generation sequencing the mitochondrial DNA genomes of 382 individuals from eight populations inhabiting the Pamirs and the surrounding lowlands in Central Asia. |
