Welwitschia mirabilis is the only living species within the Welwitschia family, which is endemic to the Namib desert. This species has an extremely long lifespan with some individuals living over 2000 years and bears a single pair of opposite leaves which persist as long as the plant lives. However, their underlying genetic mechanisms as well as the evolution were poorly elucidated. |
