Infections, mainly including sepsis, meningitis, and pneumonia[1, 2], are the primary cause of about 3 million global neonatal deaths per year[1, 3], which contributed more than 20% to the neonatal deaths worldwide[4]. The infected neonates are often treated empirically and unnecessarily[5]. In addition to death, some unoptimistic prognoses may be generated without timely diagnosis and proper therapy, including several neuro-developmental complications[3] and long-term disabilities[6]. Pathogenic profiles are complex, while bacteria, viruses, and fungi are found to be the dominate pathogens[3, 5, 7, 8]. Accordingly, not only timely but accurate identification of pathogens and therapy are needed to decrease the risk of adverse side-effects and improve the prognosis. |
