描述信息 The gut microbiome is closely related to host nutrition and health. However, relationships between gut microorganisms and host lifestyles are not well-characterized. In the absence of confounding geographic variation, we defined clear patterns of variation in the gut microbiomes of Asian elephants (AEs) variation along a lifestyle gradient (fully captive, semi-captive, semi-wild, and purely wild) in the Wild Elephant Valley, Xishuangbanna, China. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the microbial diversity decreased as the degree of captivity increased. Combined results of SIMPER, LEfSe, and WGCNA analysis showed that the bacterial taxon WCHB1-41_c was significantly affected by lifestyle gradient variations. Quantitative real-time PCR revealed a paucity of genes related to butyrate production in the microbiomes of AEs with a pure wild lifestyle, which may affect host health.
