The Sogdians, known as the "Oriental Jews", were one of the famous merchant peoples on the ancient Silk Road. They came to China as merchants, artisans, entertainers, etc., and produced generations of Sogdian descendants. However, owing to a lack of first-hand written records, the origins of Sogdians who entered China and their relations with surrounding populations remain elusive. Here, we successfully produced genome-wide data for two ancient individuals retrieved from a joint burial (M1401) in Guyuan cemetery of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), to the best of our knowledge, the first ancient genomic data from Sogdians who entered China to date. |
