Title Intragastric administration of short chain fatty acids greatly reduces voluntary ethanol intake in rats.
Relevance Medical
Data types Transcriptome or Gene expression
Organisms Rattus norvegicus
Description This study investigates the potential of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) as an intervention for alcohol use disorder (AUD), a major public health issue with limited therapeutic options. Using alcohol-preferring rats, intragastric administration of SCFAs significantly reduced alcohol consumption and mitigated alcohol-induced intestinal, hepatic, and neuroinflammation. These findings highlight the relevance of SCFAs, particularly butyrate, as a safe, cost-effective strategy for addressing AUD.
