Description Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease known to infect humans, non-human primates and rodents. However, the virus has been seldomly found in wild animals. Through daily behavioral and health monitoring of three human-habituated wild chimpanzee communities living in Tai National Park, we documented the emergence of monkeypox in this population between January 2017 and May 2018. Here we provide 14 complete and 3 partial monkeypox virus genomes detected in the faecal samples collected from these chimpanzees during the outbreaks.
