CERNA2- a long noncoding RNA expressed in all four major, clinicopathologic subtypes of ovarian malignancy

Annotated Information

Approved Symbol

CERNA2

Name

CERNA2:competing endogenous lncRNA 2 for microRNA let-7b HOST2[1]

Characteristics

CERNA2 is a novel member of the family of long non-coding mRNA-like genes, 2.9 kb in length, without an obvious open reading frame (ORF).[1]

Function

CERNA2 promotes tumor cell migration, invasion and proliferation in epithelial ovarian cancer [1]. CERNA2 harbors a let-7b binding site and inhibits let-7b functions post-transcriptionally, thus regulating cell growth and motility [1]. In human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line SMMC-7721, CERNA2 is found to promote cell proliferation, migration and invasion, and inhibit cell apoptosis [2].

Regulation

Let-7b can bind to CERNA2 and repress its expression in EOC [1].

Disease

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma[2]
  • Ovarian cancer[1]

Expression

CERNA2 is obviously upregulated in an EOC-derived cell line, OVCAR-3, compared with the other tested cell lines, including MKN28, Huh-7, HepG2, McF-7, DU145, A357, MG63, Hep-2, ARK2 and HeLa [1]. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues, the expression of CERNA2 is up-regulated by approximately 2–10 times [2]
