Characteristics

Human PEG8/IGF2AS appears to be transcribed from the region between human IGF2 exon 4 (corresponding to mouse exon 1) and exon 4'(no corresponding exon in the mouse) in the opposite direction to the IGF2 transcript [2]. Human PEG8/IGF2AS has an open reading frame encoding a putative protein consisting of 273 AA [2]. IGF2-AS is a ubiquitous transcript, found in normal tissue, as well as neoplasms [1].

Function

Product of this gene functions as a growth factor therefore IGF2 is the best candidate for gene responsible for Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. [2].

Regulation

The role of the human IGF2-AS is unknown, and it is not clear how the transcript is regulated in vivo. [1]

Expression

High expression of PEG8/IGF2AS has been detected in Wilms' Tumor samples, whereas very low or almost no expression has been observed in the normal kidney tissues neighboring the tumors [2].

Evolution

Human PEG8/IGF2AS exhibits about 50% homology with mouse Igf2as (Peg8) but lacks an apparent tandem repeat in the middle part [2].

Diseases

  • Wilms' Tumor [2].
  • Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome [2].
  • colon cancer [1].
