Characteristics
The previously identified GAU1 lncRNA (LOC101929549)located at chromorsome 12p13.32 is 1,294 bp in length according to the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and the NCBI databases. . In a study, however, a novel 1339-bp isoform of LOC101929549 was reported named lncRNA GALNT8-antisense-upstream1 (GAU1), a novel transcript that differs from the previously determined genomic boundaries by 57 bp at the 5′ terminus and by 4 bp and a poly-A tail at the 3′ terminus. This isoform of the LOC101929549 lncRNA identified in retinoblastoma and neuroblastoma is a novel non-coding transcript; and therefore named GALNT8-antisense upstream 1 (GALNT8-AU1 or GAU1; GenBank: MF576259). [1]
Function
GAU1 is a novel oncoRNA that promotes tumorigenesis in neuroblastoma and retinoblastoma. lncRNA GAU1 cis-regulates the expression of its downstream target gene, GALNT8. GAU1 recruits transcription factor TCEA1 to the GALNT8 promoter and activates the expression of GLANT8.[1]

Expression
When GAU1 or GALNT8 was overexpressed in normal cells (RPE1 and ARPE19), cell colonies were significantly increased in GAU1-overexpressed and GALNT8-overexpressed normal cells. Moreover, the cell proliferation was also promoted, either in GAU1-overexpressed or in GALNT8-overexpressed normal cells, indicating that GAU1 lncRNA and GALNT8 play an oncogenetic regulatory role and that the GAU1/GALNT8 cluster may serve as a potential cancer-driving chromosomal region.
