Function
The OsHKT2;1 transporter from rice, previously named OsHKT1, functions as a relatively Na+-selective transporter in heterologous expression systems. Compared with related OsHKT2;1 wild-type control plants, OsHKT2;1-null rice showed remarkably reduced growth, accompanied with a withering of the oldest leaf under low Na+ and K+ starvation conditions.[1] Thus, rice OsHKT2;1 transporter can mediate large Na+ influx component into K+-starved roots, allowing improved growth of rice.

Evolution
In rice, there are eight HKT-like genes. OsHKT2;1 is the first gene to be discovered and shares 93% identity at the nucleotide level with OsHKT2;2. Moreover, OsHKT2;1 has 73-76% identity at the positions 669-855,1016-1170 and 1366-1502 with OsHKT2;3/4 in rice.
