Annotated Information

Function

 Chitin (a polymer of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) is a major component of fungal cell walls that triggers various defense responses in both animals and plants. 

The defense responses triggered by chitin perception in rice are similar to those in other plant species, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, pathogenesis-related (PR) gene expression and biosynthesis of phytoalexins. The chitin elicitor binding protein (OsCEBiP) is a plasma membrane glycoprotein that contains two LysM domains but lacks an intracellular kinase.

It has to work with Chitin elicitor receptor kinase 1 (OsCERK1 also known as LysM-RLK1).OsCERK1 

and OsCEBiP form hetero- and homo-dimers in Y2H assays. OsCEBiP and OsCERK1 are present in a receptor complex immuno-precipitated from rice cells treated with chitin indicating that these proteins interact in vivo upon ligand recognition. In cultured rice cells, the recognition of chitin elicitor induces a series of defense responses including the activation of MAPKs, ROS production, defense gene expression, phytoalexin production and the accumulation of phosphatidic acid (PA).

Evolution

OsCEBiP is a homologous gene to CEBiP, which is discovered in Arabidopsis.
