UIP1 (3'-UTR-interacting protein 1) acts as a chaperone protein of RbcS1 transcripts by associating with the RbcS1 3'-UTR in an event of SMD leading them to either PBs or SGs[1].
Annotated Information
Function
The CBS domain of UIP1 is necessary for binding to 3' RbcS. UIP1 interacts with 3' untranslated region of RbcS1 mRNA and increases tolerance of transgenic overexpressors to drought stress[1].
Mutation
transgenic and nontransgenic (NT) control plants[1]:
- During drought stress conditions, NT plants started to show visual symptoms of drought-induced damage such as leaf rolling and wilting with a concomitant loss of chlorophylls at an earlier stage than the OsCc1:UIP1 plants.
- Upon rewatering, transgenic plants recovered well compared to the NT plants. Consequently, NT plants remained severely affected by drought stress while transgenic lines partially recovered after 3 days of rewatering.
- The Fv/Fm values of the OsCc1:UIP1 plants were higher than those of the NT plants under the time course of stress treatments.
Expression
- Transgenic overexpression of UIP1 in rice resulted in an increase in tolerance to drought stress at the vegetative stage of growth. Under drought, high salt and low temperature conditions, the maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) of UIP1 plants was higher than those of the nontransgenic plants[1].
- Interestingly, the effect of UIP1 overexpression on tolerance to stress was much more pronounced under drought than under high salt and low temperature conditions[1].
Knowledge Extension
The 3'RbcS is the major mRNA region involved in a phenomenon referred to as stress-induced mRNA decay (SMD) under drought and salt stress conditions. SMD was observed on the mRNAs of photosynthetic genes (e.g., RbcS1, Cab1, and PCY) that are rapidly degraded when
plants are exposed to stress[2].
