The rice gene Os04g0101800 was reported as sor1 in 2013 [1] by researchers from Japan.

Annotated Information

Figure 1. Differences in rooting between the sor1 mutant (A, C, E, and G) and wild-type Nipponbare (B, D, F, and H).[1].

Gene Symbol

  • Os04g0101800 <=> OsSOR1,sor1

Function

  • sor1 is a single recessive gene which can cause soil-surface rooting and altered root gravitropic response.

Phenotypic analysis

  • Under submerged conditions, the roots of all mutant plants elongated on or just below the soil surface in plant pots (Figure 1A); however, no wild-type Nipponbare plants (WT) had such roots during the seedling stage (Figure 1B). The cup method showed that mutant plants had many soil-surface roots (Figure 1C); however, WT had very few such roots (Figure 1D).
  • The glass tube method showed that mutant plants had many primary roots elongated on the upper side of the agar surface (Figure 1E); however, WT had no such roots (Figure 1F).
  • The basket method showed that mutant plants had many soil-surface roots (Figure 1G); however, WT had few soilsurface roots (Figure 1H). These results revealed that our mutant is a novel mutant for soil-surface rooting.
