Function

  • Both Pik-1 and Pik-2 encode coiled-coil nucleotide binding site leucine-rich repeat (NBS-LRR) proteins, and each shares a very high level of protein identity with corresponding proteins encoded by the Pik-m and Pik-p alleles.
  • A combination of Pik-1 and Pik-2 is required for the expression of Pik resistance.

Expression

  • Real-time RT-PCR analysis was used to characterize the expression of Pik-1 and Pik-2 in plants challenged by the Pik-avirulent blast isolate CHL381. Both were constitutively expressed, although at a low level. Following inoculation, the level of transcript for both genes declined further up to 12 h post-inoculation, thereafter increasing marginally to the steady-state level by 72 h post-inoculation. As a similar expression profile was also observed using a mock inoculation, it is possible that both genes were responding to abiotic stress.
