The rice gene Os01g0633500 was reported as Rd in 2006[1] by researchers from Japan.

Annotated Information

Gene Symbol

  • Os01g0633500 <=> Rd, DFR, OsDFR, OS-DFR

Function

Figure 1. Metabolic pathways for the synthesis of pro-anthocyanidins and anthocyanins. [1].
  • Rd encodes dihydroflavonol-4-reductase (DFR).
  • Red coloration in rice grains is determined by the complementary effect of two genes, Rc and Rd, and each of these genes is inherited monogenetically. Rc gene is responsible for the accumulation of pigments in the pericarp of brown-colored grains. Furthermore, red rice grains require the Rd gene to increase the content of the pigment.

Mutation

  • The Rc and Rd genes are involved in the red pigmentation in rice grains, Rc and rd are involved in the brown pigmentation in rice grains, and either rc and rd or rc and Rd produce ordinary white rice grains (Figure 3).
