OsAPX1 can affect the ability of rice plants to withstand chilling at the booting stage. When overexpress OsAPX1 in rice, it can increase APX activity which determine the antioxidant capacity. The levels of H2O2 and the MDA content increased by 1.5-fold and twofold, respectively in WT plants subjected to a 12℃ treatment for six days. In contrast, transgenic lines showed small changes in H2O2 levels and MDA content under cold stress, and H2O2 levels and MDA content were significantly lower than in WT plants. And the spikelet fertility was significantly higher in transgenic lines than in WT plants after a 12℃ treatment for six days. The reason is the APX activity enhances H2O2-scavenging capacity and protects spikelets, thereby increasing spikelet fertility under cold stress[2].

Function

OsAPX1 is a member of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) family. It is a haeme-containing enzyme of the ascorbate glutathione cycle that detoxifies reactive oxygen species in plants by catalyzing the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to water using ascorbate as a specific electron donor. The OsAPX1 expression is stress regulated[1].

Expression

Please input expression information here. Different APX isoforms are present in discrete subcellular compartments in rice and their expression is stress regulated. And OsAPX1 exist in the cytoplasm of rice. OsAPX1 show a weak constitutive expression in leaves. Their transcripts were up-regulated upon wounding (by cut), and diverse signals such as salicylic acid (SA), ethylene (using the ethylene generator, ethephon), abscisic acid (ABA), hydrogen peroxide, copper sulfate, protein phosphatase (PP) inhibitors, cantharidin (CN), endothall (EN) and okadaic acid (OA), and blast pathogen (Magnaporthe grisea) attack, but surprisingly not by jasmonic acid (JA). OsAPX1 mRNAs expression manifested a clear rhythmicity under light/dark cycle[3].
