Abstract

Peripartum cardiomyopathy. Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a dilated cardiomyopathy occurring during or following pregnancy in the absence of pre-existing heart disease. The aetiology is still uncertain. The clinical presentation is similar to that of other etiologies of heart failure. Echocardiography shows the presence of systolic heart failure and helps to monitor the evolution of the CPMP. The basic treatment is symptomatic. New therapeutic perspectives (bromocriptine, immunosuppressant) are being evaluated. Cardiogenic shock and thromboembolic events are the main complications. The risk of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies is not negligible so regular follow-up is essential.
