Description |
Circular RNAs are classified as "non coding RNAs" previously. However, recent evidences of our group and others teams suggest that circRNAs are indeed translatable. In our previous work, we confirmed that circular RNA can translate functional proteins in cells. By using high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics techniques, we have screened several circular RNAs with coding potential; The ability of these circular RNAs to encode proteins was confirmed by rigorous molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology experiments. For example, we found that circular RNAs circPINTexon2 and cirCDH1 can encode novel proteins circPINT-87aa and circCDH1-254aa, respectively, which regulate two important biological process: cell cycle and cell migration respectively.Protein is the ultimate executor of biological process. The discovery of new protein often means the discovery of new life phenomenon. We will open a new research area for exploring the important biological functions of circular RNA and reveal a new regulatory mode of biological process. |
