Spliced (5 exons), with multiple isoforms. Located at the X-inactivation center (XIC), transcribed from an unmethylated CpG island 10 kb upstream of Xist. Transcribed in antisense orientation to Xist. (Johnston (2002)).

Function

Involved in the regulation of X chromosome inactivation in mammals via activation of the Xist RNA, possibly by interfering with Tsix expression (Tian (2010)). Jpx seems to act in trans, as its deletion prevents Xist up-regulation also from the Xist allele on the wild type chromosome (Tian (2010)).

Expression

Ubiquitously expressed. Up-regulated during both male and female embryonic stem cell differentiation (Tian (2010)).

Conservation

First exon is highly conserved in mouse, human and cow (Chureau (2002)).
