1Summary
Title Physiological and Biochemical Variations in Different Pepper (Capsicum annuum var. conoides) Varieties under Salt Stress
Description To elucidate salt tolerance mechanisms in cluster pepper, salt-tolerant (P47) and salt-sensitive (P18) varieties were selected from 63 accessions for comparative analysis. Under salt stress, P47 exhibited superior physiological performance with lower electrolyte leakage, MDA content, and Na+/K+ ratio, alongside higher chlorophyll, proline content and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities. Ultrastructural analysis revealed severe cellular damage in P18, while P47 maintained intact chloroplasts and organized mesophyll structure. Integrated omics analysis identified phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and glycerophospholipid metabolism as key pathways, with salt-responsive genes (SAUR, ARF7, TAT) functionally linked to hormone signaling and specialized metabolism. These findings provide molecular targets for breeding salt-tolerant pepper cultivars.
