Annotated Information
Gene Symbol
- Os02g0649300 <=> OsEXPA3
Function
- OsEXPA3 is required for root system development in rice and involved in mediating root growth by mediating cell-wall loosening
- OsEXPA3 is a critical root expansin gene that is intrinsically involved in root system architecture adapted to some abiotic stresses.
- Modification of cell-wall compositions mediated by OsEXPA3 repression changed the wall mechanical properties, which elucidated the cell loosening process both biochemically and mechanically.
Expression
- Semiquantitative-PCR analysis demonstrated that OsEXPA3 expressed preferentially in the root of 1-wk- old seedlings.
- Expressing preferentially in the root throughout the whole developmental stages, OsEXPA3 displayed the expression peak in 1-wk-old seedlings but decreased drastically at the tillering stage, and the expression diminution continued with the passage of growth time.
- As to abiotic stresses and nutrient deficiency, OsEXPA3 expression in the root was significantly upregulated by NaCl stress, while repressed by N and Pi deficiency. The result implies an intrinsic function of OsEXPA3 in regulation of the root system architecture in response to abiotic stresses.
Figure 3. Effects of OsEXPA3 downregulation on the root system architecture. (a) Primary root length of 1-wk-old seedlings. (b) Lateralroot density of 1-wk-old seedlings. Two independent transgenic lines (Line 1 and Line 3) were analyzed. The seeds were placed on half-strength Murashige and Skoog solid medium and grown for 7 d vertically in a growth chamber. Primary root length was determined using a ruler. All visible lateral roots that emerged from the primary root were counted. Values are the means of 20 biological replications ± standard error. One independent plant was considered as one biological replication.[1].
