name and function

this gene is OsDIL and the rice OsDIL gene plays a role in drought tolerance at vegetative and reproductive stages.

evolution

OsDIL is a stress-responsive gene.OsDIL enhances drought tolerance at the vegetative stage.Overexpression of OsDIL in rice improves drought-tolerance at the reproductive stage.Expression of stress-responsive and flower developmental genes in transgenic plants.

discussion

Plants are sessile and have evolved an array of distinct mechanisms to respond and adapt to abiotic stresses. Increasingly frequent occurrences of drought are the major challenges for rice production (Zhang 2007). We showed here that decreased or elevated expression of OsDIL in rice reduced or enhanced, respectively, the tolerance to drought at the vegetative and reproductive stages.

summary

In summary, OsDIL is a positive regulator for improving drought tolerance. OsDIL might transfer lipid molecules to synthesize cuticle in leaves to reduce water loss under drought and to facilitate sufficient pollen exine synthesis for microspores against drought. OsDIL could improve the plant cellular environment and promote ROS elimination to protect tapetal cells and other tissues.
