The rice gene Os04g0537900 was reported as OsVPE1 in 2009 by researchers from China[1].

Annotated Information
Function
- Os04g0537900 <=> glup3(esp7), esp7, glup3, OsVPE1, VPE1, OsaLeg3
- OsVPE1 is a homolog of the Arabidopsis bVPE gene. OsVPE1 encodes a 497-aminoacid polypeptide.
- OsVPE1 is a cysteine protease that plays a crucial role in the maturation of rice glutelins.
Expression

Evolution
Figure 4. A phylogenic tree of plant vacuolar processing enzyme (VPE) proteins. The rooted tree was generated based on a multiple sequence alignment using the program DNAMAN. The scale represents the percentage substitution per site. GenBank accession numbers for each protein and their similarity to OsVPE1 are indicated. [1].
- Multiple sequence alignment shows that this VPE is more closely related to several previously identified seed-type VPEs (such as Arabidopsis bVPE, castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) VPE, rice NP1 and rice REP2) than to vegetative-type VPEs (such as AtaVPE, cVPE, dVPE and Proteinase B) (Figure 4).
