AIM: This concept analysis seeks to define and clarify the concept of role transition in nursing. The concept is analyzed as it relates to the BSN-prepared nurse transitioning from expert bedside nurse to novice adjunct clinical faculty.
BACKGROUND: BSN-prepared nurses may struggle when transitioning to adjunct clinical faculty roles. Analysis of the concept is needed to its unique meanings and significance.
METHOD: Walker and Avant's linear model of concept analysis provided the framework for this analysis.
RESULTS: The analysis revealed that role transition in nursing has three defining attributes: assimilation to the role, straddling identities, and mentorship support with development, identity, and mentorship as antecedents.
CONCLUSION: With nursing faculty shortages, transition of the BSN-prepared bedside nurse to the adjunct clinical faculty needs fostering for successful role transition. Using assessment tools in addition to mentorship and support may positively affect this role transition.
